A viable treatment option is available at Vission Eye Center for those who are unsuitable for laser eye surgery. Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) also sometimes referred to as lens implants or lens implant surgery, are used for the correction of very severe levels of short sight, long sight and astigmatism and can restore optimum vision.

With the exception of some eye diseases, most people are suitable for IOL; even patients with Keratoconus can be treated with this procedure. Although a perfect result is unlikely, the patient will have improved vision. The Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is an advanced, thin, clear lens that functions similar to a contact lens, but is surgically implanted into the eye. The ICL is maintenance-free, cannot be felt in the eye and can be removed if needed and therefore is a reversible procedure. The ICL does not replace your natural lens, but is implanted in front of your natural lens and behind your iris (the coloured part of the eye). The procedure is a permanent one – or until you decide that you may want to remove it.

Advantages of ICLs
  • Low risk and permanent solution
  • No sensation of foreign object as lens cannot be felt in the eye
  • No maintenance is required
  • Reversible procedure where the lens can be removed if needed
Eligibility for ICLs

ICL surgery may be suitable for patients who:

  • You wear uncomfortable or heavy glasses
  • Struggle with wearing contact lenses
  • You are not a candidate for laser eye surgery such as LASIK
